John Simm is the latest in a line of high profile stars to tackle Shakespeare's Hamlet.
The production, directed by Paul Miller, will open at the Sheffield Crucible in September 2010.
Simm made a return to the stage this year in Speaking in Tongues, which ends at the Duke of York's Theatre this weekend.
The actor is well known for TV hits such as Life on Mars, Doctor Who and The Devil's Whore.
Rory Kinnear will also play Hamlet next year, with the long-planned National Theatre production, directed by Nicholas Hytner.
