Edward Bennett became the country's most famous understudy when, at just a few hours' notice last December, he took over from an injured David Tennant in Hamlet in the West End, winning critical acclaim and a legion of his own fans in the process. Bennett had been playing Laertes in the RSC production. His other credits to date have included A Midsummer Night's Dream, Love's Labour's Lost (RSC), Othello (Donmar Warehouse), Pygmalion, Little Nell, Habeas Corpus and Measure for Measure (all Theatre Royal Bath. He's now playing Sandy Tyrell, smitten with Diana Rigg's Judith Bliss, in Hay Fever, which opens this week at Chichester Festival Theatre. It's the second occasion he's tackled the Noel Coward classic, having played Simon in his first production out of drama school five years ago.
