Killers, Assembly Rooms, ✭✭✭✭
Using the text of letters from three of the UK’s most notorious serial killers, Brady, Sutcliffe and Nielsen, Glenn Chandler’s chilling verbatim script is brought chillingly to life by three strong performances. The script is at its most powerful when at its most simple, and for this reason it is Gareth Mortimer’s nuanced and disarming turn as Peter “Pete” Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper, that is the most alarming, but all three performers are capable of turning on the charm in the blink of an eye. Chandler gives us many insights into the workings of their minds, but ultimately it is the strong characterisations and Liam Rudden’s pacy and dignified direction that really bring this piece to life.
