An Olympic athlete-turned actor and a stand-up comic will join raw recruits in Leeds this week for an acting Boot Camp, to prove that however far you've come in your career, there's always room for improvement.
As competition for university places leaves many dissapointed, the new acting school is inviting aspiring actors of any age and experience, to join the one-day Boot Camp for a glimpse into the profession, and to see if they are match-fit for acting school.
Olympic boxer Richie Woodhall, stand-up comic Leah Shand and others will be taking part in the Open Day featuring the Boot Camp-style free acting classes at Yorkshire Dance, Friday 4th September.
Boot Camp will offer a real glimpse of life in a performing arts school, and is part of an Open Day to find out about training for actors. Auditions are taking place across the summer for 20 coveted places at Acting School North from October, and three part-paid bursaries are available to students to assist with tuition. • World Champion, Olympic boxer Richie Woodhall: an athlete and sports commentator who is branching out into acting with roles in short brit-flic ‘One Hour of Sleep’ and the feature film ‘Snatch’.
• Comic actress Leah Shand: appeared in BBC 3’s comedy show ‘Pulling’ and is an established stand up comic.
• Upcoming independent filmmaker Jon Pegg: Director of short film ‘An Hour of Sleep’ (2009) for which Rogelio Nevares coached the actors.
• Actor Nigel Boyle: Versatile actor with roles in ‘Inbetweeners’ and ‘Casualty’.
Acting School North has burst onto the scene in time for students searching out alternative options as places fill up at Universities and Colleges around the UK. The only school of its kind in Yorkshire, Acting School North hopes to work with would-be actors of any age or level of experience, and have tailored the teaching programme to allow young or mature students with other commitments, to balance full-time study with employment and family life.
Led by director Sorcha Donaldson, Acting School North will run one-year full-time courses, providing acting training and skills in other business disciplines to prepare students to create work of their own in future.

Olympic Boxer turned Actor, Richie Woodhall said: 'I've always wanted to act, and working with teachers like Rogelio Nevares has really helped me develop my skills. It's a tough industry to get into, and all the guidance you can get is worthwhile. There are also lots of similarities between training as an athlete and to prepare for an acting role, and I hope my experiences of branching out from a boxing career into acting will chime with anyone thinking of making a career-change themselves'.
