News: The Bush Theatre’s new writing policy seeks new proposals

The Artistic Director of The Bush Theatre Madani Younis and Associate Dramturg Rob Drummer have announced the second period for submissions of proposals for new work.

The company are now accepting proposals from writer/ performers and companies whose work may not begin with a script and who are at the very early stages of their career without representation, from across the UK and Ireland. The new writing policy focuses on those who approach working with text in a variety of ways.

The first window of submissions saw nearly 700 plays received, which were all read by the specialist team. Selected writers have been approached to progress their work, with one play from these submissions being worked into a full Bush Theatre production in 2015.

“It feels particularly relevant to open the second window of submissions as we begin RADAR 2013,” said Younis. “At this time, we reach out to those writer/performers and companies whose work may not begin with a conventional script writing process: artists like those we feature in RADAR such as Kieran Hurley and AJ Taudevin’s Chalk Farm and Bryony Kimming’s Heartache.Heartbreak. We ask them to send us, instead of a draft play, a proposal for the making of new work for production at the Bush Theatre – We want to push at the established way a new writing theatre can discover, nurture and produce new work and be bold in our ambitions to bring exceptional stories to our audiences.”

This year, RADAR will be pushing the boundaries still further, and provoking audiences to think beyond the walls of the theatre. RADAR will present seven of the most exciting and innovative new writing shows from across the UK and Europe; as well as three sneak peeks of new work that will take us from Shepherd’s Bush to Somalia and on to South Africa. Writers will include Bush alumni Associate Artist Caroline Horton, Lee Mattinson and Kieran Hurley, alongside new voices to the venue – Bryony Kimmings, AJ Taudevin, Patrice Etienne, and companies – Atresbandes and ANTLER.
