Primary school teacher sacked for showing Shakespeare in Love

A primary school teacher has been sacked after it emerged he showed the film Shakespeare in Love, containing sex scenes and nudity, to pupils as young as seven.

Drama teacher Robert Stringer was escorted off the premises at Canonbury Primary School in Islington, north London, within two hours of staff being made aware of the incident by a previous employer.

While employed last year at Field End Junior School in Ruislip, north west London, he showed Shakespeare in Love in which actress Gwyneth Paltrow briefly appears topless.

The parent of an eight-year-old complained, prompting a police investigation.

Police dropped the case after finding no evidence he had committed a crime. However, he left the school.

Hillingdon council later passed details of the complaint to the Independent Safeguarding Authority, set up after the murders of Soham schoolgirls Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman.

When staff at Canonbury Primary School found out, he was sacked.

That day joint acting head teachers Michelle Bahn and Lisa Horton wrote a letter to pupils’ parents, who include London mayor Boris Johnson and former schools minister Lord Adonis.
